Safety and Comfort: How to Avoid Sunburn on a Warm Rug (A Warning, Mostly Ignored)
This is a public service announcement from the Sunbeam Voyages Health and Comfort Department, which is a pillow with a clipboard. It is intended to remind travellers of the risks of overheating, and the importance of turning over.
The problem
Sunlight is wonderful, but it is not endless. A cat that lies in the same position for three hours will become warm on one side and cool on the other. This is an imbalance, and we call it a lopsided nap.
The signs of overheating
Look out for the following:
- A flat, floppy posture that is more floppy than usual.
- Panting, which is a sign that you should move at once.
- A strange smell of hot fur, like a toasted blanket.
- A sudden desire to lick the same paw for forty minutes.
What to do
If you notice any of these signs, move to a cooler place. We recommend the bathroom tiles, the underside of the bed, or a sink with a very small amount of water. Drink water. Stretch. Find shade, and rest in it as though it were a sanctuary.
The rotation method
To avoid the lopsided nap, practise rotation. Every twenty minutes, turn over. Begin with the left side, then the right, then the back, then the belly. This is known as the Full Roast. It is recommended by no one, and followed by everyone.
The importance of shade
A responsible traveller always knows where the shade is. It is the other half of the sun. Without shade, there would be no contrast, and without contrast, there would be no pleasure in the patch.
For owners
If your cat appears unwell, please do not rely on a satirical travel company. Speak to a qualified vet. We are a cat, and we have a stamp.
Conclusion
Enjoy the sun. Respect the shade. And remember that a well rotated cat is a happy cat, and a happy cat is a cat who has found a better rug.
